The pre-fall 2019 season kicked off with Chanel’s gold-drenched Egyptian-themed collection at the Met Musuem’s Temple of Dendur; that shimmering show turned out to be a harbinger of things to come. As the pre-fall presentations come to a close, gold stands out as the new metal, edging out the current passion for mirror-finish silver. Golden shades, from pale to burnished, are used for tailored pants, glittery knits, leather (or leatherette) pencil skirts and sequined frocks. Materials don’t have to be glazed or lamé — velvet in a camel tone will create the effect. The look extends to accessories, and includes gold-plated handbags, pillbox hats, brocade mary-jane flats and of course, those gilded over-the-knee boots.
