The Memphis Design Movement, the subject of a recent pop-up shop at Nordstrom, is a touchpoint for prints this season. The Memphis collective of designer and architects, founded in 1980 by Italian designer Ettore Sostass, developed an aesthetic characterized by playful color combos, neo-classical shapes and an irreverent mixing of high and low. The runways reflect Memphis’ continuing influence with prints that combine geometric shapes, motifs that mimic speckled textures like cork or terrazzo, and a preference for so-bad-its-good color combos like aqua with peach, or periwinkle with pink and mint green.
