Corset-lacing gained momentum in recent Fall collections. The decorative yet functional detail conjures both foundation garments and sport details (like the lacing on footballs or boxing gloves), making it perfect for this moment when both lingerie and athletic influences permeate ready-to-wear. The lacing appears on torsos, necklines, pant-legs & sleeves, highlighting construction while performing as a shaper or closure. Cords can be simply pushed through buttonholes or loops for a softer look, but most are threaded through metal or powder-coated grommets.
Perhaps an even more effective statement than the all-black initiative at the recent Golden Globes, the pantsuits that adorned women on the Grammy Awards red carpet showed a spontaneous movement toward personal expression and female power. The suits, many of which were printed, brocaded or embroidered with flowers, projected strength and sexiness without “male gaze” objectification. Most of the silhouettes featured sharply tailored jackets with flare-leg pants.
